Resume Preparation
There are many ways to set out your resume. REMEMBER a resume is a selling document and it represents you to a potential employer when you are not there to do it yourself.
It needs to show your skills, experience & achievements and how closely they meet with the job specifications of the role for which you are applying. This will determine whether you will be interviewed so make sure that you have enough detail.
You should have a covering letter. The covering letter should point out your experience directly relating to the job ad to which you are responding.
Ensure you address the following in your resume.
- Full name
- Full address
- Contact details, home and/or mobile phones plus personal e-mail address
- Education /Training / Qualifications
Note: items 1 - 6 all on first page if possible - Brief overview of skills / experience listing (optional)
- Employment history, starting with your current or most recent position and work back. (If you are a mature person, the last 15 - 20 years employment history is enough) This should include start and end dates for each position, the firm or company you were employed with and the title you held. It should also give a short description of the duties carried out within each position and the achievements you made.
- Hobbies and interests (optional)
- Give business references ( or to be given upon request)
- Be honest with your skills and achievements (they will be reference checked)
Employment history content suggestions:
-
Name of Employer
-
Commencement and termination dates (Month & Year)
-
Your job title
-
Summary of duties and responsibilities
-
List some achievements from each employer
Remember a resume is a selling document, DO NOT SELL YOURSELF SHORT
